Why a DIY Graduation Party Photo Booth is a Must-Have

In the world of event planning, a graduation party photobooth is the ultimate engagement tool. It gives guests a reason to interact, laugh, and document the day. Store-bought frames are often small and flimsy, but by creating your own, you can customize the size to fit large groups of friends and family.

As a Designer, I love this project because it proves that with the right structural logic, you can turn a basic cardboard box into a “Showstopper” that looks like a custom rental piece.

Materials for Your Dollar Tree Graduation Frame DIY

To achieve a high-end look on a budget, you need the right material.  Here is your shopping list:

  • Large Piece of Foam Board: I used black foam board from the craft store ( You can also use recycled shipping boxes!)

  • Utility Knife & Straight Edge: For precision cutting.

  • Black Felt, Red Ribbon, and Gold Embroidery Floss

  • Adhesives: I highly recommend Beacon 3-in-1 and a high-temp hot glue gun for a professional bond.

  • Embellishments: Glitter cardstock and Gold Glitter Glue

Step-by-Step Guide: Engineering Your Photo Booth Frame

1. Creating the Interface (The Cut):
Start by measuring your foam board or cardboard. For a standard group frame, I recommend a total size of 24″ x 36″. Cut the center out, leaving a 4-inch border on the top and sides. Leave a larger 8-inch border at the bottom—this is where your “Class of 2026” text will be placed.

2. Applying the Patterns:
Download and print my free patterns below. Glue them down using craft glue. To make them look “Boutique-Style,” outline the letters and numbers with glitter glue. This adds a sparkle to the numbers and text that will look amazing in photos!

3. The Final Assembly:
Create a diploma and Graduation hat to the top corners to frame the graduate’s face perfectly. Step-by-step instructions  to make these are show in the video.

Fixing Structural Build

The “Wilt”: If the cardboard is thin, glue a second strip of cardboard horizontally across the back of the top and bottom bars. This acts as a “Support Beam” to keep the frame rigid.

Styling Your Graduation Backdrop with the Frame

If you are also creating a DIY graduation photo backdrop, this frame is the perfect finishing touch. You can hang it from a PVC pipe frame using fishing line so it “floats” in the center of your backdrop, or leave it handheld for guests to move around.
