Why a DIY Graduation Party Photo Booth is a Must-Have
In the world of event planning, a graduation party photobooth is the ultimate engagement tool. It gives guests a reason to interact, laugh, and document the day. Store-bought frames are often small and flimsy, but by creating your own, you can customize the size to fit large groups of friends and family.
As a Designer, I love this project because it proves that with the right structural logic, you can turn a basic cardboard box into a “Showstopper” that looks like a custom rental piece.

Step-by-Step Guide: Engineering Your Photo Booth Frame
1. Creating the Interface (The Cut):
Start by measuring your foam board or cardboard. For a standard group frame, I recommend a total size of 24″ x 36″. Cut the center out, leaving a 4-inch border on the top and sides. Leave a larger 8-inch border at the bottom—this is where your “Class of 2026” text will be placed.
2. Applying the Patterns:
Download and print my free patterns below. Glue them down using craft glue. To make them look “Boutique-Style,” outline the letters and numbers with glitter glue. This adds a sparkle to the numbers and text that will look amazing in photos!
3. The Final Assembly: Framing the Graduate
Create a diploma and Graduation hat to the top corners to frame the graduate’s face perfectly. Step-by-step instructions to make these are show in the video.
To achieve that professional “Boutique” look with the placement of your frame signature graduation elements. I recommend placing the miniature graduation diploma and the stiff felt graduation hat on the top corners of your frame. This draws the eye upward and frames the graduate’s face perfectly, creating a focal point for your photos.
-
Creating the Diploma: To get that crisp, authentic “rolled diploma” look, I use a narrow paper tube as the base—this adds structural stability so the diploma won’t collapse or lose its shape. I wrap it in high-quality white printer paper, secured with a classic red satin ribbon for that traditional graduation aesthetic.
-
Balancing the Elements: I always recommend placing the graduation hat and the diploma on top corners to create visual balance. I like to use a hot glue gun to attach the accent so they can withstand the excitement of a party atmosphere, ensuring your decor stays intact from the first photo to the last!
The diploma was made from wrapping white paper around a paper tube and tied with a red ribbon. This technique is shown in my DIY Graduation photo booth video.
The Graduation hat is made from stiff felt. Why Stiff Felt Beats Paper for the Graduation Cap? A paper graduation cap, even if it is cardstock, folds, bends, and tears, where the choice of stiff felt ensures the cap maintains its structural throughout the entire party because it’s durable and party resistant. It can also be saved as a keepsake for the Class of 2026.
The tassel is so quick and easy to make in less than 5 minutes and for less than a dollar. This tassel can be used for all of you graduation decorations. Here are step-by-step instructions for how to make the graduation tassel.

Fixing Structural Build
The “Wilt”: If the cardboard is thin, glue a second strip of cardboard horizontally across the back of the top and bottom bars. This acts as a “Support Beam” to keep the frame rigid.
Styling Your Graduation Backdrop with the Frame
If you are also creating a DIY graduation photo backdrop, this frame is the perfect finishing touch. You can hang graduation photo booth frame so it “floats” in the center of your backdrop, or leave it handheld for guests to move around.
