DIY Graduation Cap Party Hat (With Free Pattern!)
Learn how to make a DIY Graduation Cap Party Hat perfect for the Class of 2026 Graduation Party! This Graduation cap DIY would also make a great Graduation Centerpiece or do it yourself graduation party favors!
With a few inexpensive materials, free pattern, black card stock, black stiff felt, embroidery floss, twist tie and a button, you can make this beautiful DIY Graduation Cap party hat. You can customize the colors to match the school theme. It’s a great project for using up leftover pieces of craft supplies while creating something that looks high-end.
Materials for Your DIY Graduation Cap
- FREE Printable Graduation Cap Pattern – Birthday Hat Pattern
- Black Cardstock – Provides a sturdy base
- Black Stiff Felt –Creates a professional, fabric-like finish for the cap top
- Embroidery Floss – Use school colors for a personal touch
- Twist Ties – For securing the tassel
- Ribbon – (Optional) Adds a tailored, finished look around the base
- Craft Glue
- Hot Glue Gun
- Scissors

Step-by-Step Instructions for DIY Graduation Cap Party Hat
- Prep the Pattern – Start by printing my FREE Printable Graduation Cap Pattern – Birthday Hat Pattern and cutting out the party hat pattern piece. This is your templates for the cardstock.

- Trace the Pattern onto black cardstock and cut out. This will be the foundation of the graduation cap.

- Add glue to one side of the hat cutout.

- Fold in the sides of the cap in overlapping the edges to make the cone.

- Cut a square piece of stiff felt 5 inches x 5 inches. This is going to be the graduation cap.

- Create the Tassel – Click for step-by-step instructions on how to make a graduation tassel. Open the embroidery floss loops and feed a twist tie through. Secure another twist tie around the top to form the tassel head. Trim the ends for a clean look.
- Hot glue the tassel to the felt square and attach a button over the center to finish the graduation cap part of this party hat.

- Assemble the Cap – Attach the stiff felt graduation hat square to the side of the cone party hat finish your DIY Graduation Party Hat.


The Tailored Look – For a pro finish, glue thin black ribbon around the seam of the cone, the base of the cone, and each side of the graduation hat square. Attach an elastic cord to the inside of the hat.
